Romans 9:11 – the purpose of God

15-07-2021 - Posted by Hans

For, not as yet being born, nor putting into practice anything good or bad, that the purpose of God may be remaining as a choice, not out of acts, but of Him Who is calling.

For the person who wants to be important himself and who wants to stand on a pedestal, the above truth is indigestible. Many expositors have struggled to get out of the truth of it. For example, by claiming that God’s election is based on “forward faith.” It is argued that since God knew beforehand how Jacob and Esau would act, He would have based His choice on that. But in that case, God’s choice would still be based on what the boys did. Hadn’t he seen their “good or evil” and “works” beforehand?!

Paul’s statement leaves nothing of this explanation intact. GOD’S purpose and his choices are the foundation. GOD’S plan precedes all that man invents, chooses, and acts. Our works do not carry any weight. Why not? Listen to Paul’s answer: ” that the purpose of God may be remaining as a choice, not out of acts, but of Him Who is calling…”!
