Newsflash: Is a crisis looming over the Temple Mount?

According to reporting by the British platform Middle East Eye, the United States and Israel are said to be working on plans to strip Jordan of its administration over the Temple Mount. The American government has since strongly denied this, but the report does show how sensitive and explosive the situation around this place has now become.
The Temple Mount — known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif — is currently administered by the Jordanian Waqf. On the grounds are the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. At the same time, this place is regarded by the Jewish people as the location of the former temples.
Within Israeli politics, the call for a greater Jewish presence and prayer rights on the grounds has been heard for some time. Some religious groups are even making preparations for a future temple and sacrificial service. That makes any change to the current status quo extremely sensitive.
Israeli security analysts had already warned earlier that interventions around the Temple Mount could be understood by the Islamic world as a direct provocation or even a declaration of war.
It is noteworthy that the Bible does indeed speak of a future temple and sacrificial service in Jerusalem, while at the same time the enclosed area outside it is given to the nations (Rev. 11:1-2). This is precisely what suggests that the coming temple will not stand on the site of the present Dome of the Rock, but next to it. Presumably farther south, near the Gihon spring, so that both sanctuaries could exist side by side.
