In an interview for American television, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made remarkable statements about the military relationship between Israel and the United States. Netanyahu declared that he wants to completely phase out American financial support for the Israeli army in the coming decade.
I want to bring the American financial support for the military cooperation we have down to zero.
(…) I do not want to wait for the next Congress. I want to begin now.
In another interview, Netanyahu explicitly confirmed that he means the military support will eventually disappear completely. In doing so, he also declared:
We want to be as independent as possible. (…) We want to move with the United States from aid to partnership.
The statements are telling. Israel no longer presents itself as a dependent ally, but as a center of power that independently determines the course. That an Israeli prime minister, of all people, openly speaks about ending American military support underscores how greatly the balance of power in the Middle East has shifted. Israel is manifesting itself ever more emphatically as a militant and dominant force that does not merely react to geopolitical developments, but co-dictates them — also toward America.
The Biblical prophecies speak of a final world empire that will have its center in the Middle East and in which Jerusalem plays a key role. That, however, is not the fulfillment of God’s promises, but an unbelieving anticipation of them.
