Romans 1:18 – For God’s indignation…

For God’s indignation is being revealed from heaven on all the irreverence and injustice of men who are retaining the truth in injustice…

Paul argues very precisely in these verses, which is evident from the repeated “for”. Paul would like to evangelize in Rome (: 15). How so? For I am not ashamed of the Gospel (: 16). Why not? For the Gospel is a power of God for salvation (: 16). How so? For in the Gospel righteousness of GOD is revealed to the one who believes (: 16,17). What do you mean for who believes? For wrath of GOD is revealed from heaven over all the irreverence and injustice of men.

GOD counts faith as righteousness and therefore unbelief as injustice. The revelation of GOD’s righteousness is “into faith,” while the revelation of GOD’s indignation is about “all unrighteousness.”

It is very important to read sharply and also to notice what is not there. Paul does not speak of a coming indignation from GOD. It says in the present tense: “is being revealed.” Nor is it about revealing God’s indignation on people, but “about all the irreverence and injustice of men.” And that revelation does not take place on earth but “from heaven”: GOD withdraws and lets people do…
