1 Corinthians 10:16,17 – One bread, one body
29-07-2019 - Posted by Andre PietThe bread which we are breaking, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, who are many, are one bread, one body, for we all are partaking of the one bread.
In the night that Jesus was given up and celebrated the Passover with his own, he thanked for the bread and said, “This is my body, broken for your sakes. This do for a recollection of Me”(11:24). Had we only had the accounts in the four gospels, these words would only apply to the Passover celebration. The special thing, however, is that Paul, (according to his own words) learned from the Lord about this meal (11:23. The words “this is my body” speak of the ecclesia, “the body of Christ”! No one who knew that beforehand. It was hidden and specifically revealed to Paul. Because through him the truth of the ecclesia was made known as “the body of Christ”!
As believers who are part of this ecclesia, we do not celebrate Passover. There are not rituals for us anyway. But when we are together and eat and drink together, it is an expression of community. We are one and we celebrate in joy that just like the bread is one, we also form one body!
