…seek that which is above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Be disposed to that which is above, not to that on the earth.
In verse 1 the call was: “seek that which is above.” That verb is active and indicates that it is directed toward things that are hidden. That is also logical, for Christ is, after all, withdrawn from sight, sitting at the right hand of God. In verse 2 follows, “be disposed to that which is above.” That goes deeper. It touches the mindset, that which determines one’s thinking. Not only what you are seeking, but from what vantage point you are thinking.
That we should be disposed to that which is above is not because the earthly would be inferior. God is, after all, the Creator of heaven and earth. Earthly relationships, such as marriage and family, are held in high esteem in Scripture. Precisely in this chapter Paul also speaks about them in that spirit (3:18-21).
The motive for being disposed to that which is above is that Christ is there. Realize what that means. There, at the right hand of God, a man is seated—exalted above all. And we are connected with Him as Head and body. And even though we stand with both feet on the earth, our Head is in heaven. Literally and figuratively!
