Romans 9:14,15 – Does God discriminate?

What, then, shall we be declaring? Not that there is injustice with God? May it not be coming to that! For to Moses He is saying, “I shall be merciful to whomever I may be merciful, and I shall be pitying whomever I may be pitying.”

Paul has explained how GOD in His purpose chooses some for His intent. Like for example Isaac or Jacob. GOD’S choice was pre-determined and it is wholly independent of what man does. “What then shall we be declaring?” A warning against a wrong conclusion. Isn’t it unjust for GOD to favor one in advance and thereby put the other behind? What could Esau do about coming into the world first and Jacob second? Isn’t it discrimination to grant privileges to one and withhold it from the other on that basis?

The answer to the question raised by Paul himself should be clear: “not at all!”. For GOD is GOD. The “I am” as He revealed Himself to Moses (Ex.33:19). As the Creator of all things, He is completely free to have mercy on whomever He pleases and however and whenever He pleases!
