Romans 1:1 – Saul! Saul!

03-07-2020 - Posted by Andre Piet

Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, a called apostle, severed for the evangel of God…

The Romans letter is the first letter of Paul in our ‘New Testament’. This is also the case in the oldest complete manuscripts that have been preserved. It is also the longest letter containing without doubt also the most fundamental exposition of “the good message of GOD”. It forms the basis of all further teaching of the apostle. We will discover this naturally in the course of the discussion.

As always in his letters, Paul begins to introduce himself. First of all, his name, which we already knew from the book of Acts. His first name was Saul, named after Israel’s first king of the tribe of Benjamin. And also the later enemy and infamous persecutor of David, the man who was anointed to establish the final dynasty. Was Saul of Tarsus, the Benjaminite, not an enemy of the Son of David, entirely following in his footsteps? Until… he was called, “Saul!, Saul!, why are you persecuting me…?” And that changed everything. Saul was overwhelmed by the grace of GOD, as he would write later. He did not seek his ministry himself – he was called to do it by God!
