Titus 1:2 In expectation of life eonian

… in expectation of life eonian, which God, Who does not lie, promises before times eonian.

After the previously mentioned characteristics of Paul’s apostleship, here is the third characteristic. He points to the basis of his apostleship: it is “on the basis of expectation”. This expectation is a “happy expectation” (cf. 2:13) and, moreover, very firm because it is based on the word of the God Who does not lie.

The expectation here is that “of eonian life.” Usually this term is translated “eternal life” And that may be but eons in the Bible are world ages with both a beginning and an end.

The eonian life in Scripture is the name of the life of “the eon to come” (Luke 18:30). That eon begins when the present evil eon will give way to Christ’s reign in “the thousand years” and God’s will “shall be done in heaven and on earth.” Israel and Jerusalem will lead the earth under the leadership of Christ…along with the ecclesia which is his body with a heavenly position. And to think that that eon is just the beginning. LIFE will be shining brighter and brighter!
