Since when Son of God
12-12-2011 - Posted by MarlijneSince when is Jesus the Son of God? From church history, the answer is: Jesus is the Son of God “for all times”. Or, as the creeds of Nicaea and Athanasius formulate it: “God the Son…for all times”. Unfortunately, these are “words of human wisdom” (1Cor.2:13).
When we consult the Scriptures, we find a completely different answer. No one expressed it better than the heavenly messenger, Gabriel, who said to Mary:
Holy spirit shall be coming on you, and the power of the Most High shall be overshadowing you; wherefore also the holy One Who is being generated shall be called the Son of God. Luke 1:35
Jesus is the Son of God, since and on the basis of, His birth out of the Virgin Mary. And because this was a completely unique birth, Jesus is called “the only begotten Son of God” (John.3:18). Jesus became the Son on this specific day. As it was foretold in the Psalms, and later, in the “New Testament”, is repeated several times:
My Son are You; I, today, have begotten You.
Psalm 2:7; See also: Acts 13:33, Heb.1:5; 5:5,8
If the power of the Most High had not come over Mary, then there would be no Son of God. But don’t we read that the Son already existed, before His birth? Certainly, but not as “Son”, but as “the word”, through which all things have come to be (John 1). More on that later, because concerning these lofty details, we cannot soon exhaust our meditation. May God grant us the courage to think ‘outside the box’ and to speak about these things, only, in full agreement with His word.
