Romans 8:5,6 –life and peace

12-05-2021 - Posted by Hans

For those who are in accord with flesh are disposed to that which is of the flesh, yet those who are in accord with spirit to that which is of the spirit. For the disposition of the flesh is death, yet the disposition of the spirit is life and peace.

Flesh and spirit are the contrast here. “The flesh” refers to man in his weak physical manifestation. On the other hand, “the spirit” refers to God’s power that raised Christ from the dead (: 11). That is “the spirit of life” (: 2). Flesh is visible while spirit is invisible.

To be in accord with  flesh or spirit means to be in accordance with it. It is an associated disposition, inclination, or orientation. The disposition of the flesh is death and that of the spirit “life and peace”. “Life and peace” go together, like death apparently involves discontent or strife. About this Paul wrote in chapter 7: the battle that rages in “the body of this death” (7:24; see also 7: 10,11)? The frustration and dissatisfaction of your own inability. Wanting but not being able to.

“The disposition of the spirit is life, that is,” the spirit of life in Christ Jesus “(: 2). He who is resurrected. His peace begins where our hopeless struggle ends. Because He does it!
