Romans 8:31 – What then shall we declare to these things?

What then, shall we declare to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

After climbing so many peaks and taking in just as many views, Paulus pauses and looks back. “What then shall we declare to these things?” In doing so, he reflects on what he has just described. What follows is not a new teaching, but wonder in the form of rhetorical questions. So questions in which the answer is already suggested.

The first question is: “If GOD is for us, who is against us?”. The Romans letter began with God’s indictments against humanity and the inescapable conclusion followed: “there is none righteous, not even one.” But as it is true that all sinned and fall short of God’s glory, so it is true that all are justified freely by God’s grace. Such is GOD for us!

But if the one GOD who ordains everything is for us, who or what can ever be against us? The logic in this sentence is so compelling and disarming. Since every creature and circumstance is perfectly under GOD’S control, by definition nothing can be against us! What solid confidence!
