Judges 11:34 – Jephthah’s daughter
05-10-2020 - Posted by Andre PietWhen Jephthah came back to his house in Mizpah, behold, his daughter came forth to meet him with tambourines and choruses. She was his one and only child; apart from her he had no son or daughter.
Jephthah had just triumphed over the Ammonites. A little later (: 36) it is called: the vengeance on his enemies. Interestingly, the word for ‘vengeance’ is literally ‘resurrection.’ Jephtha’s enemies humbled him but GOD raised him up. Jephtha’s victory speaks of Christ’s resurrection.
Jephthah lived in Mizpah. This place is a reminder of the covenant once made with Jacob (Gen. 31:49). YAHWEH watches over that. Even though history takes a turn and the people of Jacob will not be the first to recognize the Messiah. GOD nevertheless watches over that covenant!
The first to meet Jephthah joyfully is his daughter. She who came out of him and lived in his house. She is a type of the ecclesia today. She is the first to recognize and celebrate Christ’s victory. Jephthah had made a vow and said that whoever would do it first would belong to YAHWEH. Jephtha’s daughter would remain a virgin. She would never become the bride (> Israel!). It speaks of the high destiny reserved for the people who have the status of firstborn.
