Ephesians 5:10 – testing what is well pleasing to the Lord.

Believers are “children of light” and would therefore be walking in the light (5: 8). With light Paul points to the word of the risen Lord (5: 14). And like light generates life and fruit in the nature, so it’s the same in spiritual sense. GOD’s living word enlightens us, makes us shining and it generates fruit. That fruit is described here as an inner state, an attitude. GOD’s light transforms us “in all goodness”, that means that it raises us to what builds up and what’s beneficial. And also to what’s right and true. These conditions are, figuratively, the DNA of “the fruit of the light”. Each concrete word or act that is generated by it, is always good, right and true.
By walking in the light, we test what is well pleasing to the Lord. Those aren’t two different things, it’s one. Testing means determining, experiencing. By the light of the living word, we are able to notice what’s important. I.e., what is well pleasing to the Lord!
