Ephesians 5:9 – the fruit of the light15-08-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet
For the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth.
In this letter, more than once, Paul uses the contrast of light and darkness. He writes: once you walked “darkened in comprehension” (4: 18), because of the ignorance. But when GOD reveals, then that is called light. Everything which is making manifest is light (5: 13). That is the Biblical definition of what light is.
Light is in the Scripture always connected to life (“the light of life”). Such as darkness always ties up with death (“the shadow of death”) We see that when in the early spring the days are getting longer and the power of the sun increases, and also new life comes up. First we see the flower buds, then the flowers and at the end also fruit. That is what light produces. Also in spiritual terms that’s true. Where GOD reveals himself (namely in the Word), that generates fruit “in all goodness and justice and truth”. Not like an enforced, but like a natural law.
First and foremost, the light is the Evangel that death is conquered, and the appearance of imperishable Life. Like when the stone was rolled away at the new day broke. That light makes a human shining!
