Concordant Version in Digital Form

Because “every Scripture” is inspired by God, it is of great importance that translations render it with great precision at the level of individual words. I know of no translation that has succeeded in this as well as the Concordant Version of the New Testament. Concordant here means that one strives for a one-to-one rendering from the source language into the target language (insofar as the idiom permits). The Concordant Version is available in book form, and the image below shows what this translation looks like with all its indications of symbols, superscript, and light- and boldface text.

Digitizing

Now an online version of the Concordant Version is also available, but it is merely plain text without the countless special markings of the original. Years ago, for that reason, I began entering all the superscript and lightface markings into the computer for myself. Because I got stuck in this work at some point, I recently began completing this task after all. At present I am halfway through the Gospel of Mark, and after that I only still have to do Luke and John (well, that is…). Fortunately, a good friend of mine, the man behind Scripture4all.org, has developed a program in which I can do this work very efficiently. Magnificent.

And Then…?

This probably means that in a few months’ time (depending on how much time I can put into it) the Concordant Literal New Testament will be completely available in digital form! In any case, the result will be incorporated into the excellent ISA program, but in addition I am considering publishing a two-column New Testament (possibly in my own management). At first I am thinking of an edition with the NBG translation in one column and the Concordant Version in the other.

Anyway, that is still not where things stand at this moment. First I need to get back to work on completing the data entry, and in due course I will consider the various options regarding the result. Perhaps in response to this weblog I will receive some useful suggestions about that…
