1 Timothy 6:3 – Teaching in accord with devoutness
14-06-2024 - Posted by HansIf anyone is teaching differently and is not approaching with sound words, even those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the teaching in accord with devoutness.
The word here translated “devoutness” is usually rendered “godliness” (Gottesfurcht – Fear of God). Or also with ‘piety’. The Greek word (eu-sebeia) is made up of the elements ‘good’ and ‘worship’. It indicates an attitude aimed at the good worship of God. In the Hebrew Bible this is called “the fear of YAHWEH”. Or as Paul puts it in Romans 1:21: “Glorify God as GOD.” By the way, there is no scripture in the ‘New Testament’ in which ‘devoutness’ is mentioned as often as in this first Timothy letter (9x).
“The sound words even of our Lord Jesus Christ,” which Paul heard by revelation from heaven, are entirely in accordance with “the teaching in accord with devoutness” Devoutness is an attitude that “the sound words” work out. These words have that healthy, vital, joyful effect because they are in harmony with “the teaching of devoutness.” Education in which God really is GOD, the One, the Omniscient and the Omnipotent emphasizes that nothing ever goes wrong with GOD. For He orders all things and He never forsakes the works of His hands!
