satan’s greeting?

I am regularly alerted to the so-called satan’s greeting that political leaders and other celebrities are said to make. Conspiracy sites give this phenomenon wide coverage. Take a look at the images below… (image AI generated)

el diabolo
Now it is true that the horned hand gesture (“el diabolo”) is a favored sign within Satanism. Below is an image of Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, tellingly with his horned left hand on the Satanic Bible. (image AI generated)

The two images below also make clear how unsavory the gesture can be. Note the image on the left, where the pierced right hand comes from above and the horned left hand from below. (image AI generated)

the original belongs to…
But beware of hasty conclusions. The emblem of the two horns does not by definition belong to Satan. On the contrary! The adversary is never original – certainly not when it comes to the symbol of the two horns. In Revelation 13:11 we read:
And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and it had TWO HORNS LIKE THOSE OF THE LAMB, and it spoke like the dragon.
The precise identity of this beast is not at issue here. In this context it is sufficient to establish that this beast from the earth (better: the land), with its two horns, is an imitation of Christ. As a pseudo-messiah it must therefore have two horns.
Longhorns
Besides the meaning above, the emblem of the double horn has from ancient times also referred to a type of buffalo, the Texas longhorn. (image AI generated)

The hand gesture and the accompanying “Hook ’em Horns” are well known in Texas (click here). That explains why the Bush family, originating from Texas, often uses this symbol. Obama too, who recently visited the Longhorns in Texas, allowed himself to be photographed with this gesture. This has nothing to do with the veneration of Satan.
I Love You
The gesture of the two raised fingers is also often confused with the English “I Love You” sign, which is known among the deaf but is also frequently used by pop artists. In that case not only the little finger and index finger are raised, but the thumb is extended as well.
And in some cases we may perhaps do better not to look for any symbolism at all behind the horned hand gesture…
