The movie of your life

From a visitor to my site, I received the following message:
Andre,
My name is …, and I have recently come to believe in “universal reconciliation.” At first, despite my fairly recent conversion, I was strongly opposed to it. But since I’ve begun to see the biblical facts (…) I’m becoming increasingly convinced of this Good Message. I just have a question about judgment, and I hope you have an answer. Given the fact that the unbeliever can store up wrath, I assume that he will be judged in proportion to the amount of wrath he has accumulated.Rom. 2:5 – Yet in accord with your hardness and unrepentant heart you are hoarding for yourself indignation in the day of indignation and revelation of the just judgment of God.
How do you think this will happen? Can you find this somewhere in the Bible?
Kind regards …
My response:
Dear …,
How wonderful that God has opened your eyes to the Evangel concerning “the Saviour of the world”!
The “day of indignation” mentioned in Romans 2:5 refers to the period that will come upon the earth after Christ has appeared to Israel (1).
In addition, every person will also, individually, appear before God (2). In that context, I have never come across terms like wrath or beatings, etc. What is stated, however, is that everything will be made manifest (3). The books will be opened (4). Man will stand ‘naked’ before God—nothing will remain hidden. The movie of our life will play.
The public revelation of how everything truly is—therein lies the judgment. The evidence will speak for itself.
“…Affliction and distress will be on every human soul which is effecting evil…” (5). Utterly confronting!
“All who are inflamed with anger against Him shall be ashamed…” (6).
It will become undeniably clear that the evil thoughts man once held about God were entirely unfounded. One will see that he stands before One who is seated on a “great white throne” (7)—that is, One who is blameless and pure in all that He does.
The “revelation of the just judgment of God” may be crushing, distressing, and shame-inducing, yet it is essential in bringing every creature to its intended destiny. All that is crooked will be made straight. The “just judgment of God” is not a black, doom’s day event—it is correction (setting things right) in the truest sense of the word. This judgment is an essential phase on the path to God’s ultimate goal: to become “all in all” (8). God does not become all in a godless person as such—no, He becomes all in the godless person whom He justifies (9); who is ashamed of his past, who agrees with what God says (10), and who, to the glory of God the Father, will acclaim: Jesus is Lord! (11)
Scripture references:
(1) Revelation 6:14 – The signs in sun, moon, and stars (sixth seal; 6:12–13) will occur when the Son of Mankind appears to Israel (Matthew 24:29–30)
(2) Ecclesiastes 12:14
(3) 1 Corinthians 4:5
(4) Revelation 20:12
(5) Romans 2:9
(6) Isaiah 45:24 – “… and all those who are inflamed against Him shall be ashamed…” (Note: the Dutch Statenvertaling and NBG are mistaken in rendering this as “but shall be ashamed”)
(7) Revelation 20:11
(8) 1 Corinthians 15:28
(9) Romans 4:5
(10) The Hebrew word for ‘believe’ is directly related to our word amen, which means: it is certain and sure.
(11) Philippians 2:11
I hope these reflections are of help to you.
God’s blessing!
