1 Timothy 1:10,11 – The sound teaching in accord with the Evangel

… and if any other thing is opposing sound teaching, in accord with the evangel of the glory of the happy God, with which I was entrusted.

We have already considered the fact that the doctrine of which Paul speaks is sound. Now we are also determined what “sound doctrine” is. Here we read that this is “according to” or “in accord with” the Evangel, in other words: with the good news. Good news in general already has a vitalizing and health-giving effect. As Proverbs 15 verse 30 says: “Good report confers richness on the bones!”

The description of the Evangel as we find it here is extremely beautiful! It is “the good report of the glory of the happy God.” We also encounter the expression “the good report of the glory” here also in 2Corinthians 4:4, but there it is about “the glory of Christ, who is the image of the invisible God”. However, here we speak of “the glory of the happy God”. God’s glory is expressed in all facets of His being and His actions, but nowhere is that glory expressed so significantly as in the fact that He is “the happy God”. Not vaguely (as in many translations) “blessed God”. No, much more concretely: “the happy God”!
