Romans 14:5 – Each one in his own mind

09-02-2022 - Posted by Hans

One indeed, is deciding for one day rather than another day, yet one is deciding for every day. Let each one be fully assured in his own mind.

The first example Paul mentioned in connection with “strong” and “weak faith” had to do with eating or not eating meat products (:2). Here, he is dealing with the difference between days. One distinguishes one day from another. For him, certain days are fundamentally different from other days. The first thing we think of is the Jew who keeps the Sabbath every week. For him the seventh day is duly set apart (sanctified) from the preceding six days. And with good reason! For is not the Sabbath the preeminent sign that God had given to the Israelites to keep (Ex.31:13)?

At the same time, there are the nations to whom that sign has not been given. For them there is no fundamental difference between one day and the next and the distinction between them plays no role. Here too Paul does not intervene substantively in the discussion. Because that’s not what this is about. Everyone would think independently and draw their own conclusions. Do not think what the other person thinks but think for yourself!
