Romans 1:4 – Jesus’ lineage

… concerning his Son who comes of the seed of David according to the flesh, Who is designated Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection of the dead, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

The contrast here is between “according to the flesh” and “according to the spirit.” According to the line of genealogy, GOD’s Son comes from “the seed of David”. Indeed, Joseph was from the house of David, but he was not the biological father of Jesus. It is because Mary was able to trace her family tree back to David that Jesus was indeed “of the seed of David” according to the flesh. It is not without reason that we find two genealogies in ‘New Testament’ that both trace back to David. One follows the line of Joseph and the other of Mary. This is extremely interesting because it means that Jesus Christ, both legal and biological, is “the Son of David”!

But Jesus Christ is not only “Son of David”, he is also “Son of GOD”. The first is based on his genealogy, the bloodline – after the flesh. The second, however, is “according to the spirit of holiness,” or “according to holy spirit.” He was conceived without the intervention of a man. Impossible … but true!
