1 Corinthians 11:26 – The Lord’s death

For as often as you are eating this bread and drinking this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until He should be coming.

Coming together to have a meal together as ecclesia is more than just having a meal. It is a proclamation. Because the bread speaks of “the body of Christ”, about which Paul has so much to say. And the cup that is used to drink speaks of victory. Bread and cup are types and have a great significance.

Christendom has turned this Lordly meal into a ritual. The sparse nature of one piece of bread and one sip of grape juice is illustrative of this. This also applies to the deadly seriousness with which people are usually involved. Add to that the sour questions about who may be sitting and who may not, who may ‘minister’ it, the frequency, and so on. Should all that be called a celebration?

Bread and cup proclaim the Lord’s death but it is not a funeral meal. Because the death we proclaim has been conquered! The stone has been rolled over! The cup proclaims this victory and the wine speaks of the Life that comes from his death. When we understand this, every meal as ecclesia becomes a celebration around a living Lord. Until he comes back!
