1 Corinthians 11:25 – The Cup

Similarly, the cup also, after dining, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do as often as you are drinking for a recollection of Me.”

If we only had the reports of Matthew, Mark, and Luke about “the Last Supper,” we learned that Jesus gave a further instruction about the Passover celebration. But because the Lord personally informed Paul later, that also deepens the meaning of our communal meals! Bread and wine also have a special value for us.

As believers who are part of “the one Body” we do not celebrate Passover. We also do not maintain mandatory meals or rituals. But whenever we come together to eat and drink, the bread may determine us by the one body to which we belong. Just as the wine we drink determines us in “the blood of Christ” (1 Cor. 10:16). Because just as wine comes from a dark cellar as ‘spiritual’ drink, we think of him who left the grave as a “vivifying spirit” (1 Cor.15: 45). The cup symbolizes the victory over death. It is an emblem of the spirit of “the new covenant”. That is why we say: to life!
