1 Corinthians 8:5 – Many gods and yet óne GOD

Idols (:4) are creations of people. That does not alter the fact that Scripture recognizes the existence of ‘gods’. The word ‘god’ means (from Hebrew and Greek) subjugator and installer. A power being who disposes , assigns and directs, either in heaven above or on earth below. For example, kings and judges are occasionally called ‘gods’ and ‘lords’ That is why “the GOD” is rightly called “the GOD of the gods”. Paul says: there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’. But pay attention to the quotes. It is only ‘supposedly’.
Although to a certain extent ‘gods’ and ‘lords’ are a reality, for those who know the real proportions, only “óne GOD” counts. Because all those ‘gods’ and ‘lords’ with their powers are, when it comes down to it, no more than pawns of the One GOD. He alone is the One who in turn gives all these ‘gods’ and ‘lords’ a place: hold it up right here. So there is only one GOD.
