1 Corinthians 6:13 – Foods for the bowels
25-03-2019 - Posted by Andre PietFoods for the bowels and the bowels for foods, yet God will be discarding these as well as those.
It is possible that Paul quotes a Corinthian Statement in the above saying. And it is a true one: food has only a temporary function: It is intended for the abdomen and the it stops being food. But the bowels themselves, like all our bodily functions, are only temporary. When a person dies, everything stops including digestion. Of course, we eat to maintain our body. As long as it lasts. That is what it is meant for. And whoever eats or drinks unhealthily, breaks down the body. That is obviously not wise or “expedient” (:12).
The fact that people are mortals is an intolerable thought for many. In the fight against corruptibility, some people lose themselves in nutrition this or diet that with a tenacity that is pitiful. Because yes, whatever they do: we are perishable anyway. It is much wiser to acknowledge this than to fight it.
But GOD has incorruptibility in store for us. Eating and drinking is also a picture of that. And in that awareness we thank Him for all He gives to us to enjoy!
