1Corinthians 3:11 – Óne foundation
11-12-2018 - Posted by Andre PietFor another foundation can no one lay beside that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
The subject Paul is talking about is the strengthening and expansion of the ecclesia. Previously, he used the metaphor of breast milk and solid food. Or that of planting and irrigating. Paul was the one who had planted the ecclesia through the preaching of the Word. Now he continues with the metaphor of a building. Paul is the one who laid the foundation of this building with the heralding of Jesus Christ. There is nothing else that deserves the name ‘foundation’.
About the foundation on which the ecclesia in Corinth was built, was already written in the Hebrew Bible. It is the stone which was rejected by the builders but has nevertheless become a cornerstone (Ps. 118:22).
It is also the stone prophesied in Isaiah 28:16. GOD would found a tried and precious stone in Zion. The tried stone is the one rejected by Israel’s leaders and judged as being in fire. But GOD raised him up in Zion, ad so this stone, became the foundation of the building of GOD, the ecclesia. “From Yahweh came this; It is marvelous in our eyes!” (Ps. 118:23).
