When did Jesus become Christ?

16-11-2011 - Posted by Andre Piet

QUESTION: Was Jesus not already the anointed (=Christ) from the time of His baptism in the Jordan? ANSWER: Indeed, Jesus was anointed with the holy Spirit and power at His baptism by John (Acts 10:38). When He arose from the water, the holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove (Mat.3:16). This event was a type of what would later take place, that is, when Jesus arose from the grave. By that occasion, He permanently received the Spirit (=Life), never more to die (Acts2:33). On Pentecost, Peter declared openly to his people that God made “this Jesus, Whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). The anointing with the holy Spirit in the Jordan was only a type and besides, it was temporary. As yet, Jesus first would have to die and “give up the spirit.” Hence, when Peter states before Jesus’ death: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Mat.16:16), Jesus emphatically forbids anyone to say that He is the Christ (Mat.16:21). Not until after his Resurrection had the whole house of Israel to hear this truth (Acts 2:36). Because only since then, is Jesus, fully and permanently, the Christ. ——————————— translation: Peter Feddema
