Romans 3:25 – purposed for a propitiatory shelter

Deliverance or redemption is in Christ Jesus. It speaks of the price he paid (in his death) to be free from sin and death (in his resurrection). GOD has presented him as a “propitiatory shelfter”. In Greek this word is “hilasterion” (Hebrew: kapporeth), which elsewhere (Heb.9:5) refers to the golden lid on the ark of the covenant, the chest in the most holy place.

Once a year, on Yom Kippur, the high priest came into this room and sprinkled the lid with the blood of a slaughtered goat. By this act the high priest protected all the people. Usually referred to as “conciliate,” but that is a completely different concept. The Hebrew root (kippur, kapporeth) means “to cover” in the sense of shelter or protection. Just as Noah’s ark was “covered” with pitch (Gen. 6:14).

GOD has presented Christ as the golden lid that was sprinkled with blood. He, the dead and what is more, the resurrected Christ, offers protection to all the people. Because GOD believes in his blood!
