Romans 12:2 – Metamorphosis

And not to be configured to this eon, but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind, for you to be testing what is the will of God, good and well pleasing and perfect.

Opposed to being configured to this eon is “to be transformed by the renewal of your mind”. Our minds are renewed by being given knowledge of which this eon neither knows nor wants to know. How would this knowledge come to us but by God speaking? So through his Word. Our thinking is renewed because we learn things we didn’t know before. That is the tremendous value of examining the Scriptures. In this way we gain knowledge of God and of what He has to say.

“This renewal of thinking” is so much more than just processing information. Sure, it starts with getting to know. And with thinking. But it doesn’t stop there. True knowledge touches the heart and changes our lives. It makes grateful and happy and it gives hope. We become better at the roles assigned to us as spouses, fathers, mothers, children, colleagues, and so on. We undergo a metamorphosis, like a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. These are not tricks but the living result of the renewal of the mind!
