Galatians 6:6 – Sharing in the instruction of the Word

Now let him who is being instructed in the word be contributing to him who is instructing, in all good things.

“Each one shall be bearing his own load,” was the instruction in verse 5. That means that each one bears his own individual responsibilities and one would not shift them onto another. Paul does not change that in this verse, but he does add some nuance.

The one who teaches in the Word (Gr. katécheoo > catechesis) also has his own burden to bear. However much time he spends studying and teaching the Word, begging for support is a mockery. Paul’s adage was always: Preach the Good News for free (1Cor.9:18). He has never deviated from that principle.

The coin also has another side. For although the one who teaches cannot claim (require) support, he may indeed receive support . In fact, Paul even considers it normal that someone who loses income because he preaches the Gospel can also live on the Gospel (1 Cor. 9:3-14). That is also the thought in the verse above. Whoever receives instruction in the Word and supports the one who teaches, in whatever form, shares and contributes in the Word.
