Exodus 28:35 – Sounding gold

Then on it skirts you will make pomegranates (…) and bells of gold in their midst round about (…) Thus it will come to be on Aaron for mistering; and its sound will be heard when he enters into the holy place before YAHWEH…

In the above Bible section the garment of the high priest is described in detail. The material from which it would be made, the figures to be depicted, the colors it would be given, etc. The golden bells on the hems are particularly striking. When the high priest was engaged in the sanctuary, he was hidden from view of Israel. He was not seen but… he was heard.

The writer of the Hebrews letter would have no problem explaining such details (9: 5,8). For the High Priest we know, “according to the order of Melchizedek,” Priest ánd King, is today in the heavenly sanctuary and is also hidden from view (8: 1; 9: 24). That is characteristic for his position now and for the work that goes with it. But despite the fact that we don’t see him, he (thank God!) Will make himself heard. All we hear from him (his living word!) is sounding gold!
