Ephesians 5:18,19 – Loosened tongues
29-08-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet…And be not drunk with wine in which is profligacy, but be filled full with spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing music in your hearts to the Lord…
It is well known: wine (and alcoholic beverages in general) increases the mood and happiness. The first effect of alcohol is that it loosens the tongue. People speak and sing more easily. In this, the effect of wine shows similarity with the fulfillment in GOD’s spirit. Because this fulfillment also means that people will speak among themselves and sing “in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs”. In other words “making music in their hearts to the Lord”. The word for “making music” is in Greek “psallo” (>psalm) and indicates and ode to GOD accompanied with a (stringed) instrument.
Music is a type of the Word of GOD that sounds. It is a Divine language of harmony and chords. Where Ephesians 5:18 speaks of being fulfilled in spirit, the parallel verse in Colossians 3:16 speaks about the word of Christ that would be making its home in us richly. Spirit and Word are one. The word of Christ is spirit and loosens the tongues. There’s music in that word!
