John 6:42

In six passages in the Gospel of John we read of Jesus’ claim that He has descended out of heaven (3:13; 6:38; 6:41; 6:42; 6:51; 6:58). The imagery of descending is drawn from the history of the manna, which came down as bread out of heaven. It is in that context that Jesus teaches in John 6 that this manna is a type of Himself. He is the living and heavenly bread that has come to earth from God.

It is no surprise that we encounter this imagery specifically in the Gospel of John. From the outset, Jesus is presented in this book as “the word” (logos) through Whom all things came into being, and “the word” that became flesh through Mary. His origin is thus heavenly.
