1 Corinthians 8:4 – Óne or Nó GOD
10-06-2019 - Posted by Andre PietThen, concerning the feeding on the idol sacrifices: We are aware that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God except One.
As already mentioned in verse 1: the subject is the feeding on the idol sacrifices. Paul starts with the basic statement that there is no idol in the world. The characteristic of an idol is that it is made by a human. Either as an abstract idea or as a concrete an tangible image. But always designed as a construction by man himself. An idol is a “work of human hands” (Ps. 115:4). Opposite to that is the truth that man is a creation of GOD.
No given fact in all of Scripture is as fundamental as “there is no other GOD except One”. “One” is not so much a quantitative as it is a qualitative fact. Only with one God, can God actually be GOD. One hundred or ten or three and even two gods should share their power with each other. What one god decides, the other god could undo. Not with one GOD. Only óne GOD is absolute. Someone who ordains everything and everyone and with whom nothing can go wrong!
