Newsflash: humanlike, yet not human

Recently in China a broadcast was watched by an estimated one billion people, in which humanoid robots were shown performing complex and coordinated movements. Less than a year ago such actions were scarcely possible. By now these systems display physical control and precision that until recently were unthinkable. The developers speak of a new phase, referred to as “physical intelligence.”

This development evokes associations with what John describes in Revelation 9:16. There mention is made of an enormous army of two hundred million, originating from the region east of the Euphrates. In addition, John describes beings with humanlike features, who at the same time are clearly not human. He does not explain what he sees, but describes it. Familiar imagery is used to depict something that eludes fixed categories.

For a long time such a combination was difficult to imagine, both with regard to the enormous number and the nature of these beings and their origin. Developments in our time show how such data can be conceived concretely, without thereby necessarily saying that this is what John saw.

Scripture does not ask to be adjusted. Time repeatedly shows how precise and forward-looking it is.
