On his victory tour through the Middle and Far East, an unusual ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 29, in South Korea. During an official state visit, Donald Trump received from the hands of the South Korean president a replica of a golden royal crown, displayed in regal fashion in a showcase lined with red velvet. Outside, demonstrators shouted “No kings!”, but it was precisely that which underscored what was happening inside: Trump was not received as an ordinary political leader, but as someone with royal status.

This event does not stand on its own. In Saudi Arabia, Trump was earlier received in the royal palace with honors that are normally reserved exclusively for monarchs. In Israel, he is viewed in the light of the Biblical king Cyrus, the Persian ruler who was used by God to usher in a new era. Also in Europe, Latin America, and especially in the Middle East, Trump is being honored with state ceremonies, decorations, and military salutes that are characteristic of royal dignity.

Strikingly, this veneration is not limited to the political arena. In religious circles as well, Trump receives royal honors: last year in New Jersey, for instance, he was presented with a silver Torah crown by Orthodox Jewish leaders – a symbol of spiritual and messianic authority – in recognition of his commitment to Israel. His influence goes beyond any office or role: it is his person that is honored and feared – a sign of personal authority, characteristic of kingship. Even his fiercest opponents confirm this image when they accuse him of “monarchical tendencies” or warn against a “king in America.” Their language of protest betrays that they perceive him as a figure who rises above the ordinary political stage and appears as a sovereign.

Worldwide, then, it is not an officeholder being glorified, but a man being honored as king. Does this not strikingly recall the prophetic description in Revelation 6:2 about the rider on the white horse?

“…a crown was given to him.”
