It is not without significance that John in the ‘Revelation’ presents Jesus as “the beginning of God’s creation”. This fits seamlessly with the prologue of his account in the Gospel. All things came into being through the Word, and since Christ is the Word become flesh, He is therefore “the beginning of God’s creation”. This is not because He was the first to be created, but because everything that has been created proceeds from the Word. All things “came into being”, but “the Word was”. It is very characteristic that one of Christ’s names is: “the Word of God” (Rev.19:13). The entire creation of God finds its origin in that Word.
