Colossians 1: 5 – The word of truth

… and the love which you have for all the saints, because of the expectation reserved for you in the heavens, which you hear before in the word of truth of the Evangel…

That so much faith, love and expectation was found among the Colossians was caused by “the word of truth.” It was not a program or philosophy they had encountered, but “the word of truth.” In the prevailing philosophies today (including in Christendom!) such a claim is considered unacceptable and pretentious. For one doubts the faith and one believes in the doubt.

However, Paul is absolutely certain of the things he writes about. After all, he is an eyewitness and representative of the risen and glorified Christ. It was not philosophy or religion he preached, but “the truth of the Evangel.” Evangel means: good news. The Evangel is not a command, not a story, not a ritual and not even an offer. It is an announcement and good news from God. The Evangel announces that God has fulfilled the ancient promise by raising His Son from the dead. A historical fact. In this way He brought to light incorruptible life in which every son of man will ultimately participate (2 Tim. 1:10; 1 Cor. 15:22). Everyone in their own order. Believe it or not. End of message.
