Romans 7:21-23 – three times ‘law’
13-04-2021 - Posted by HansConsequently, I am finding the law that, at my willing to be doing the ideal, the evil is lying beside me. For I am gratified with the law of God as to the man within, yet I am observing a different law in my members, warring with the law of my mind, and leading me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
These verses speak of (1) “the law of God,” (2) “the law of my mind,” and (3)” a different law in my members, “or” the law of sin which is in my members. ” . “The law of God” refers to the law that God gave to Israel through Moses. “The law of my mind” refers to “the inner man” who delights in the law of God. The “law in my members” is of a different nature. That is not a normative law, but a law that Paul signals in his members. By “my members” he means all body parts and their functions (ear & hearing; eye & sight; mouth & speaking, hands & action, etc.).
Paul here describes man “under the law”. Someone who believes that the “thou shalt” is a task that man must fulfill. An impossible task!
