1 Corinthians 14: 17,18 – Where giving thanks is appropriate
25-11-2019 - Posted by Andre PietFor you, indeed, are giving thanks ideally, but the other is not edified. I thank God that I speak in a language more than all of you.
The Corinthians expressed their gratitude in speaking in languages (: 16) but also because of speaking in languages. And of course, giving thanks to GOD is appropriate, but in the ecclesia the question is whether the other person is also built up by it.
It is difficult for us to imagine the impact of speaking in languages. That is understandable, because since the Word of GOD is complete and the ecclesia is mature, this phenomenon has disappeared (13: 8). Thanks to the report in Acts 2 in particular, we know what the sign meant. People heard of the great deeds of GOD in their own language, while the speakers had never learned that language (Acts 2: 8). In such a setting, such speaking is an impressive sign!
But the Corinthians had ‘run wild’ with this sign. inappropriately people babbled while nobody understood what was being said. That of course was never the intention of this miracle sign. Paul himself spoke more than anyone of the Corinthians in languages and he was grateful to GOD for that. Because the way he spoke it actually had meaning!
