Ephesians 5:18 – filled full with spirit!

And be not drunk with wine, in which is profligacy, but be filled full with spirit…

The bible has no objection to the drinking of wine. On the contrary: about the grapevine and the fruit of it, is often spoken laudatory. Wine is a type of the new life, that comes from among the dead. Once grape juice went in the crypt, as spirituous moisture it came out.

Paul doesn’t warn for the drinking of wine, but for getting drunk of it. Drunkenness is a state that one lost control over the own behaviour. Paul speaks of profligacy. The Greek word (asophia), Paul used, literally means: un-save.

Towards getting drunk, Paul puts: “be filled full with spirit”. Wine is although a type of spirit, and both are connected to joy, but there is also a big difference. Getting drunk leads to senseless thinking and speaking. And walking becomes wobbling. And it destructs relationsships and so much more. But who is filled full with spirit (= the word of Christ; Colossians 3: 16), has not only joy, but also thinks clearly and full of sense. And speaking becomes constructive and the walk in the right course. Without hangover…
