Ephesians 3:18 – Being strong to grasp

15-06-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

…that you having been grounded in love, should be strong to grasp together with all the saints, what is the breadth and length…

Paul’s prayer does not concern earthly circumstances, wealth or health. That was no longer a topic of prayer for Paul. Once he was assured: “My grace is enough for you”. So praying for him made way for thanking. Paul’s prayer is not about problems. It is about the unimaginable spiritual wealth that is our possession. I repeat: that is our possession. But what is there still to be said about the wealth we already have?

The answer is: Paul prays that we would grasp the riches. All his work was directed to tell, explain and record what our spiritual blessings are in Christ (1:3). More was not within his ability. There is only one who can open people’s eyes and hearts and give them a realization of it. And that is why Paul bowed his knees. So that his readers would understand how incredibly rich they are!

We possess the riches we receive “together with all the saints”. As a communal property and shared future. That is why we get together: to learn to understand all that!
