A news item in today’s paper:

Supermarket stumbles over Easter
—from our economics desk—

LONDON – The British are poorly informed about the true meaning of Easter, but even major companies show limited biblical knowledge. The British supermarket chain Somerfield made the same mistake twice.

The company conducted a survey among its customers about the meaning of Easter. “Britons eat an average of 3.5 Easter eggs during Easter weekend. But more than a quarter don’t know that Easter celebrates the birth of Christ,” Somerfield stated in a press release. (…) Somerfield promises “to be guided by the teachings of the church in the future.” According to the supermarket, the handing out of Easter eggs symbolizes the rolling away of the stone from Christ’s tomb.

Well-known, age-old customs — and at the same time so much ignorance.
The connection between the egg and Easter, by the way, is also quite different from what Somerfield suggests. An egg symbolizes hidden Life. That’s why eggs are hidden during Easter. The idea is that Life (with a capital L, because it has left death behind) is indeed present — but not simply there for the taking (> Colossians 3:1–3).

For those who really want to know how it is with the rolled-away stone and other rolling stones in the Bible, you should come to The Hague this Sunday morning.
But of course, you can also soon listen to and watch the presentation on the Goedbericht website.
