Romans 8:37 – Hyper conquerors

By “all these” Paul is referring to the enumeration of verse 35 (“affliction, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, the sword”). All circumstances that are against us. That may seem so, but Paul writes that in all this we are “more than conquering”. In Greek, this is one verb: hyper-conquering. How is that possible? How can you be more than a conqueror?
Imagine: a wrestler has won a match and receives a prize of 1000 euros. He comes home and he says to his wife: Here you go, that money is for you. The wrestler is the victor. But the woman he loves, he makes more than a conqueror. She receives the prize without having fought for it. There is no victory without a struggle. So… whoever receives the prize of victory, without having fought for it himself, is “more than a conqueror”.
It is Christ Jesus who died and was raised and now is seated at GOD’S right hand. He is the Conqueror! But because he loves us, he makes us share (free of charge!) in this victory. That makes us more than conquerors. Nothing on earth can ever void that guarantee!
