Romans 8:38,39 – The love of God

24-06-2021 - Posted by Hans

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor messengers, nor sovereignties, nor the present, not what is impending, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation, will be able to separate us form the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

In verse 35 Paul already listed an increasing series of circumstances (from affliction to sword) that aim to separate us from the love of Christ. But it is impossible. For in all that we are even more than conquerors. After all, we share in advance in a victory for which, He who loves us, Himself, guarantees.

In these verses the list of verse 35 is expanded even further. The greatest contrasts we know (death and life, height and depth) are included. But also the unseen world (messengers, forces) or what is above us (sovereignties) is involved. Regardless of whether it concerns present or future matters.

And if anything else falls outside this list, Paul adds, “any other creation.” in other words nothing at all can ever separate us “from the love of GOD in Christ Jesus.” GOD’S love is all-encompassing and unconditional. And that is why that love conquers all!
