Romans 8:2 –The spirit’s law of life

For the spirit’s law of life in Christ Jesus frees you from the law of sin and death

What a wonderful, unsurpassed answer to the problem of Romans 7! Two laws oppose each other here. There is the universal law “of sin and of death”. It is inescapable here on Earth, as is the law of gravity. Every human being is born a sinner and a mortal. But “in Christ Jesus” God creates an exit!

Christ Jesus was resurrected on the third day. Death no longer has dominion over him and he is living to GOD (6: 9,10). So completely beyond the reach of sin and death. “In Christ Jesus” also a law reigns, namely that “of the spirit of life”. Spirit and life are more or less synonymous concepts. We read a little further on “Spirit is life” (8:10). After all, when someone gives up the spirit, death occurs. But “the spirit of life in Christ Jesus” is life beyond death.

The incapacity of “the flesh” remains unchanged. But “in Christ Jesus” we are set free “from the law of sin and from death.” That too is inevitable: a law!
