Romans 4:22 – Wherefore

22-12-2020 - Posted by Andre Piet

… being fully assured also, that, what He has promised, He is able to do also. Wherefore, also, it is reckoned to him for righteousness.

Paul began this chapter with the famous quote from Genesis 15 about Abraham’s faith that GOD counted for righteousness. The whole of the following argument is an explanation of that fact. And the conclusion may be clear in the meantime. Abraham trusted in GOD who would unconditionally do what He had promised. It is not achievements (works) that make a person righteous. What counts to GOD is acknowledge what He promises.

Note, Abraham’s faith was not a condition of the fulfillment of GOD’S promise. In that case, another condition for the fulfillment of the promise would have crept in through a back door. Then ‘faith’ becomes a new kind of ‘work.’ No, the starting point is the unconditionality of the promise. GOD would make Abraham’s offspring like the stars of heaven. Period. Regardless of whether Abraham believed this or not. And on such a promise, so purely for free, Abraham said “amen” !. WHEREFORE Abraham’s faith was counted to him for righteousness. Nothing depended on himself or another person. GOD would do what He promised. That’s the Evangel. End of message!
