The concept of “righteousness” is a keyword in this letter. It is usually understood legally in terms of criminal law. That sounds Roman, but it is not the teaching of the Romans letter. GOD counts faith for righteousness (4: 3). If we want a definition of what GOD understands by righteousness, this is it. GOD is righteous because He believes in His promise: He is trustworthy and keeps His word.

When Paul speaks in the above verses of “GOD’S just judgment” then that also refers to GOD’S faith and therefore to his reliability. The idea of ”GOD’S just judgment” is not that He vengefully ‘gets even’ but rather that He pays fairly. Also, as you read these verses, notice that Paul speaks in the first place of paying those who “who by endurance in good acts.” Because GOD is trustworthy (and therefore righteous), He does not overlook the good, but on the contrary: He honors it! “GOD’S righteous judgment” offers hope, because He deals righteously and sets straight!
