Romans 2:27,28 – The true circumcision

09-10-2020 - Posted by Andre Piet

And the uncircumcision who, by nature, are discharging the law’s demands, shall be judging you, who through letter and circumcision, are a transgressor of law. For not that which is apparent is the Jew, nor yet that which is apparent in flesh is circumcision.

It is the Jew who is addressed in this passage. Religious Judaism always strictly divides humanity. On the one hand they themselves, “the circumcision” and on the other hand all the rest, the uncircumcised. Often and also here, referred to as “the foreskin”. That is a technical term, like “the letter”, that is, “the law” (7: 6; 2 Cor. 3: 7). The designation “foreskin” often also conveys a judgment of contempt (Eph.2: 11). Wrongly, because someone who does not belong to the Jewish people but does by nature what the law commands (: 14,15) is closer to GOD than the circumcised one who is taught from the law, but in the meantime does not care about it.

Is not every Jew supposed to know that true circumcision is not of the flesh, but that of the heart? Not only the prophets (Jer. 4: 4) but also Moses already spoke of this (Deut.10: 16). The foreskin (covering) of the heart would be removed. And that will happen – it has been foretold (Deut. 30: 6)!
